As temperatures rise in the hot summer months, there are many risks to your pet you may not know about. Here is a list of the risks and some steps that you can take to help prevent your pet from suffering needlessly.
- Sunburn - Just like humans, pets can suffer from sunburn, especially light-colored animals. To protect your pet, apply a sunscreen to the bridge of his nose and to the tips of his ears.
- Heatstroke - Dogs and cats don't sweat like human beings. They release their Fleas and tbody heat by panting and through the soles of their feet. It takes pets longer to cool down because of this. Don't leave your pet outside for a long period of time in hotter weather. Make sure they have access to shade and plenty of water. Never, ever leave your pet in a car during hot weather--the temperature can rise to over 100 degrees in a very short amount of time. If your pet starts panting with a rapid pulse, vomiting and acts lethargic, try to lower his body temperature immediately with some wet, cool towels. If the pet doesn't respond, call your vet at once.
- Outdoor poisons - Fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides can be deadly if ingested by your pet. Anti-freeze has a sweet taste that can tempt your pet. Store all of these type of compounds in a place inaccessible by your pet. If you suspect your pet may have ingested one of these poisons, contact your vet immediately.
- Fleas and ticks - Fleas and ticks are more prominent in summer months. A multitude of flea bites can lead to allergic reactions and skin problems. Ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme's and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Protect your pet with a flea collar or a flea-and-tick solution recommended by your vet.
Pets are member of our family and it would be a shame for them to get sick or die because their owners were careless or negligent. So, please abide by these rules. Your pet will be grateful.
