Training is important; it is the difference between your dog being your best friend and your dog being a nuisance all the time. Training can also benefit both you and your companion. Training creates a good bond between you and your dog. It also keeps your dog safe and protects him from harm such as the street because he listens to you.

Some of the basic commands that you will want to teach your dog first will be sit, lay down, stay, and come. In this article you will learn about sit and lay down. The training process for all these are commands are similar. The ultimate goal of all of the commands is to associate a word with an action. You can use any words you want. You don’t have to tell your dog sit to make him sit.

 A tip before getting started

Always be positive when you are training. Your dog will always respond better to rewards like treats and back rubs rather than yelling at them when they do not follow your command. Instead always be patient and remain positive because you dog will learn much better and both you and your dog will have a better experience.

Sit

First stand in front of your dog or sit on the floor to get his attention. Then using a treat, hold it out in front of your dog’s head to where they can’t reach. Then in one motion slowly move the treat up and back over their head to their tail, while still out of reach. This motion should cause your dog to sit. If he does, then simultaneously as he sits say the command “sit”. Some people also like to say their pet’s name, then the command sit.  If he completes the task then reward your dog with a treat. If not start from the beginning again. Keep repeating the process and eventually your best friend will be sitting on command.

Once your dog learns to sit you can teach him another important command called lay down.

Lay down

Now that your dog can sit, command him to do so. Then kneel down in front of your and get his attention. Hold out a treat out in front of his nose, but don’t let him have it yet. Slowly pull it down and away towards the floor and make sure he follows. As your dog follows he should be going in to the down position. As your dog does this say the command “down” or “lay down”. If he completes it then praise him with the treat and words like good, or a rub on the back. As in all training repetition is key. So do it over and over until your dog gets it. Don’t always try to teach your dog it all in one session. Spread it out or do it the next day so your dog doesn’t lose interest.
