Many new owners have to decide on whether or not to purchase an Australian Shepherd as a pet, working dog or a show dog. Contrary to popular belief, there are major differences in the way that show dogs look and how they are raised when compared to their working counterparts.
When choosing a new Australian Shepherd puppy, you must make note that some are bred to be family pets or working dogs, while others are used for show purposes. Those are the major differences between each purpose. Pet-quality pups are not up to the breed standard, but still make a great dog for companionship. Show and breeding-quality dogs, are animals that meet the physical requirements of the breeding standard. No matter whether you are purchasing an Australian Shepherd for a pet or a show dog, come of them cannot handle being in the show environment. With this being said, there are some show dogs that do not fit the breed standard to exact specifications and can still become winners.
When purchasing an Australian Shepherd for the purposes of showing in competitions, there are several things that the puppy must learn in order to be successful in the ring. The basics of discipline are usually the first things taught to a new puppy. Many owners of the Australian Shepherd agree that the breed is easy to train in basic commands. The Australian Shepherd was specifically bred to learn to take direction from its master, and the breed is very intelligent and great with problem solving skills.
If you are training your Australian Shepherd to be a show dog, one of the most important skills to teach is obedience. Teaching any dog basic obedience is a good idea for forming a better relationship and bond with your pet. The basic commands such as stay, sit, lay down and come are vital to get your dog to preform well in the show ring. Once mastering the basic commands, some owners also enjoy getting the dog involved in such activities as tracking ability, Frisbee, agility courses, fly ball and many other dog related sports.
People who purchase an Australian Shepherd as show dog, also find that the dog makes a great family pet, attentive companion and an excellent and versatile work dog.
