Tips to Stop Your Dog Barking

To be able to control you dogs barking you must first understand why it is barking. Your dog communicates through barking and you will develop an understanding of your dogs barking over time. Sometimes your dog will bark for the right reasons, when it needs to go to the toilet or when something is wrong. Remember, barking can be good thing!. Neighbours with barking dogs are annoying and it is up to you to train your dog about barking behaviour. Remember, you are the boss and your dog will follow your instruction about what to do and what not to do.

Maybe your dog is bored, lonely or anxious?

A major cause of problem barking is a dog who feels anxious or lonely. Perhaps your dog spends every day, all day alone while you are at work? Your dog will need plenty (1-1.5 hours), of exercise to compensate for that. A walk before or after work is highly recommended. If you find this difficult think about hiring someone to do the walking for you. Your dog will be much happier having received this attention. When you are out, try your dog with one of the many dog toys available on the market. Dogs love balls and perhaps you could even leave your dog a bone to chew on. A great way for your dog to rediscover toys is to rotate them.

Spending too much time alone is a common cause of barking. . It is important that you spend a lot of time playing with your dog and showing it affection. Dogs thrive on this. Include your dog in family activities when you are at home. Dogs who are loved are happy. A dog that is well attended to is also less likely to show other difficult behaviors and you won't need to Stop Your Dog Chewing.

Is your dog feeling playful?

Do not give in to a demanding, barking dog. Reinforcing a bad habit will be the result, if you do. A relationship built on mutual respect does not tolerate this sort of harassment. Your dog will continue to demand your attention in this way, if you do not ignore this behaviour. Moving away and turning your back towards your dog is a way to demonstrate this effectively. This is likely to confuse your dog to start with. Barking has worked before so if it keeps going for longer, it might work again. Do not give in! Be firm. Almost certainly the barking will get worse before it gets better. Praise is the key and when your dog realises barking isn't working, praise it. Positive reinforcement is the key and your dog wants to please you. It won't take long for your dog to re learn this behaviour, if you are consistent.

Effective dog training requires consistency. Pack animals such as dogs are most at ease and well behaved when they understand the pecking order. A dog has to respect your leadership to be happy, well-adjusted and well-behaved. A dog does not necessarily have to be quiet to be well behaved. It is your clear direction that will teach your dog when it is appropriate to bark.
