Top 5 Pets for Apartment Living

When living in an apartment it can be difficult to find a pet that your landlord allows you to keep and/or one that is suitable to your limited space. However, the good news for animal lovers everywhere, is that there are some pets that ideal for apartment living.

The following is a list of some of the animals you may like to consider. Of course, it is not an exhaustive list of animals that are suitable for an apartment lifestyle, but it may give you an idea of the type of pet you would like to own.

1. Hamsters are wonderful pets for apartment living. They are neither messy nor noisy. They don’t take up a lot of space either, as most hamsters spend the majority of time in their cages. Obviously, it is important to get you hamster out of his, or her, cage at least once a day to play and explore. You may even like to purchase a hamster ball so that your hamster can run around your apartment in safety. Hamsters make minimal mess and usually do so in a specific spot in their cages. Therefore, it is important to clean the cage regularly to ensure that it stays smelling fresh.

2. Birds, such as budgies and parakeets, can make ideal apartment pets. However, they can be quite noisy and this may cause problems with your fellow tenants and your landlord. The good news is that birds will go to sleep if their cages are covered, so, you will be able to ensure that your birds are quiet at night. As with hamsters, birds are predominantly kept in cages, but it’s always a good idea to let birds out of their cages from time to time. However, before releasing them, you should ensure that there is no way for them to escape.

3. Fish are possibly the best apartment pet. They take up little room, make no noise and require very little in terms of care. That said, it is important that your fish tank is cleaned regularly and that your fish have plenty of foliage, food and any special requirements that your specific fish may need. However, they do not need to be taken for a walk, will not make a mess and will not wreck your apartment while you’re out. On the other hand, although fish are proven to relieve stress and are excellent pets, you can’t cuddle with them on the sofa.

4. Cats are very independent animals and, therefore, do not usually mind if they are left alone for hours at a time. However, if you’re planning to share your apartment with a cat, it is important that you have plenty of toys and climbing apparatus to keep him, or her, amused. Many cat owners find that a bored cat will become destructive with furniture, walls and curtains, so, it is always wise to keep your kitty stimulated. Cats tend to be very clean animals, and, if properly litter box trained, you will have no problem with mess.

5. Ferrets are an increasingly popular pet. They are extremely affectionate and intelligent animals that can provide a lot of love and laughter to their owners. They are also nocturnal, which could be ideal if you’re at work during the day. However, ferrets are very active creatures and need lots of space to run and play, therefore, you may find that a section of your apartment needs to give way to a ferret playground with tunnels and toys galore.

Of course, there are many other animals to consider, such as small dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, lizards and snakes. It is important to check the regulations of your building before purchasing an animal, and it is equally important to ensure that you can provide the proper care for your pet of choice.
