Dog collar is useful accessory that should be put around your dog’s neck. It can be use to control dog or handle dog. It should have basic information such as identification of pet. This identification will be useful in case your dog got lost or wander off, anyone that will find your dog will know who the owner of dog is and the address. It is also useful for controlling your dog manually. Collars are often used with leash; these are useful when you are training or walking your dog.
Dog collars are commonly used for leading and teaching dogs. Although, some use these collars to accessorize their dogs and make them look fashionable. There are several types of dog collars but not all of them are appropriate to use on your dog. The collar to use for your dog would still depend on the breed, behavior, size and age of your dog.
One the different type of dog collar is the slip collar which is also called choke chain. This may be made of nylon, metal or leather. Pulling on the leash causes the collar to tighten up like a rope and release when the correction was given. This collar is generally used for training purposes.
Another type of collar is the Prongs or pinch dog collar. This is composed of series of chain links with blunted open ends turned towards the dog's neck so that, when the collar is tightened, it pinches the naturally loose skin around the dog's neck. Prong collars are used for large stubborn dogs with the tendency to pull on leash or do not respond to other types of collar.
Harness and Head halter are another type of dog collar that wraps around the dog’s chest. Some trainers prefer this and consider this to be more humane type of collar. Head collar or head halter is similar to what is used on horse; it acts like a harness to the head. It wraps around his mouth just in front of his eyes.
Standard collars or everyday collars are traditional collars that may be made of leather, nylon or cotton. These are the collars that can be used on dogs on daily basis. Some trainers prefer to use a buckle collar for immediate release. Never leave a prong or slip chain your when not on training, it may choke them.
