What You Should Know About a Bark Collar

Many dog owners find it to be a hard decision when deciding to implement a bark collar into the training of their dog. When you ask some of the pet experts they will tell you that when a dog has become a nuisance because of barking and other traditional methods have not work then using a bark collar as part of their training is an effective way to teach the dog when it is appropriate to bark.

These collars have many times gotten a bad rap as being cruel. This is not true especially when used according to the manufactures recommended suggestions. They are also much kinder than having to give your pet away because neighbors can no longer accept the constant barking. There are two forms of collars for barking that you can use. One uses an electrical stimulus and the other uses a scent. Both types are equally effective it is just a matter of preference.

The electrical stimulus collars work this way. You put the collar on the dog and when the dog begins to barks the vibrations from their vocal chords when they are barking triggers the collar. The collar then sends out an electric stimulus which at first may startle the dog but they soon make the connection between the stimulus and barking. Most of these barking collars come with adjustable levels of stimulus and as your dog begins to learn and starts barking less then you can lower the level of stimulus and then they just receive a reminder instead of a corrective level.

The other type of barking control collar available is a scent deterrent collar. This collar works just like the other type only instead of using an electrical stimulus it uses a scent that dogs find repulsive. When the barking activates the collar the scent is sprayed directly at the dog's nose. The scent is harmless to the dog or any humans that might be in the area. The dogs quickly learn that the scent is directly related to the barking.

There are some important things that you should know about the collars. First they are never meant to be worn all day. You only want to teach your dog when it is inappropriate to bark, not to quick barking all together. It should only be worn during your training secessions with the dog. Second they are not meant to be used as a restraint collar, when you are using the anti-barking collar you should use a harness style leash when walking your dog.

When used correctly these collars are an effective training tool to help teach your dog not to constantly bark. Some may disagree with the method but when neighbors are complaining and your dog is no longer enjoyable there are really no good alternatives. This is a safe and effective way to correct the situation making everyone happy including the dog. Implementing a bark collar into your dog's training is a good step to resolving the barking issues.
