Why Do I Need To Get A Protein Skimmer For My Aquarium?

When you are building a new fish aquarium, you will no doubt come across a great deal of expensive technology that may seem entirely unnecessary. You'll probably find yourself questioning if all these things are really necessary. The most important pieces of kit you will need are a tank, a water filter, a light, and your selection of fish, along with food and some treatments. However, if you're going to keep certain types of fish you will need some additional equipment to create a healthy environment. These kinds of equipment is sometimes necessary to maintain salt-water tanks as salt-water species of fish require a very different natural environment.

One such piece of equipment you might hear of is a protein skimmer. Protein skimmers will help to remove particles from the aquarium that, if left in the water, will eventually turn into harmful substances. They are crucial to the health of salt water fish. Without proper filtration the water would inevitably become too rich in ammonia for the fish to withstand. They would ultimately become sick or even die as a result.

If you have salt-water fish in your aquarium you will definately need a protein skimmer. This need becomes even more pronounced if your aquarium contains rocks and plants. These things are known to create a great deal more particles that will need to be removed from the water before they can change into harmful substances. A standard water filter alone will not be able to cleanse the water of these substances. As a matter of fact, there are many harmful particles that are much too small to be removed by standard filtration systems. This is why you need a protein skimmer. Protein skimmers assist in keeping the water in your aquarium clean and healthy. Because fish are so delicate, you might also consider buying a protein skimmer that's rated for a bigger tank than you currently have. That way it will never be overloaded by the nitrates and ammonia in your tank.
