Why Opt for a Hypoallergenic Dog

When US President Barak Obama adopted Bo a Portuguese Water Dog for his children's pet after he was elected, search engines worldwide were swamped with queries for this type of dog breed.  The Portuguese Water Dog or the PWD as owners fondly call it, is a breed of dog that is recommended to people with dog related allergies because of its hypoallergenic qualities.

Most people would think that since hypoallergenic dogs have no undercoat, that they would not have lots of fur.  This is not true.  With hypoallergenic dogs, their hair is similar to human hair, which is why we have a better tolerance for it.  Some dog breeds of hypoallergenic dogs are known for their long hair.  The Maltese for example is often pictured with ribbons on top of their heads to keep their long hair away from their eyes.  The Bichon Frise, another hypoallergenic dog breed is recommended by the American Kennel Club to allergy sufferers because it does not shed.  Hair will only come off when brushed.  Other dog breeds that are hypoallergenic are the Greyhound, the Puli, all Poodles and the Shih Tzu.

However, this does not mean that hypoallergenic dogs are 100% allergy free.  Allergic sufferers are still asked by most professionals to be careful as hypoallergenic dogs only minimize allergic attacks, not stop allergic reactions.  Professionals agree that shots and medication should still be taken and frequent cleaning and vacuuming of surroundings should still be practiced.  To minimize allergic reactions more, people are advised to adopt or buy small dog breeds like the Shih Tzu or Maltese as they are very small therefore even if they shed, they will be very little fur.  Small dogs are also very easy to bathe, again helping minimize shedding and controlling dander accumulation.
