Dogs make fine house pets, however the reality is that dogs are descended from thousands of generations of wild dogs, or wolves, and retain wild instincts. How is this related to dog crates?
The fact that dogs are descended from wild cousins shouldn't be a problem for the responsible dog owner, because dogs are fully susceptible to training, and a well trained dog is a fine, and good companion. However one of the results of these instincts is that a dog has an instinct for sleeping in a den at night.
Dogs don't generally sleep outdoors. They locate a den to sleep in. It's a small, dry, comfortable place where the dog can sleep safely and comfortably through.
For the average house dog safety shouldn't be an issue, and there is usually somewhere comfortable to sleep as well. However despite this dogs still like having a den to sleep in, and a dog crate makes a fine den for any dog.
There are other places in the house where your dog can make his den for the night of course. He can sleep in the laundry basket, under the table or behind the TV, or on your bed. But none of these are his.
The dog crate makes a small room for your dog. It's his, he loves it and calls it home in his own way. And it's important too when a dog has pups to look after.
And there's other reasons why a dog crate is a good idea. For example it's perfect for when you're travelling with your dog. It's somewhere for him, and whilst many motels won't take dogs more will take crated dogs. With good reason.
So when you get a new dog consider a dog crate for him or her. It's a good thing to do as soon as you get your dog and get it started sleeping in it's crate right away.
But even if you've got an older dog who hasn't used a dog crate before it's never too late to introduce your dog to a crate. Start by leaving the door open so the dog can investigate it in her own time and she may well decide it's hers for sleeping. If not try putting treats or meals in it and it won't be too long before she starts treating her dog crate as her own special den.
So give your dog a treat and buy him or her a dog crate. It's a gift to your dog.
