Three Top Tips For Testimonials on Your Website

How often have you visited a website offering a product or service and based your buying decision on the feedback and endorsements that were there?  Many people do exactly that.

So does your site use a technique for presenting some form of customer testimonial to convince visitors that your service is legitimate and that the quality of work is what you claim it to be?  Even if it does already the problem can often be that you may be unwittingly arousing more than a little skepticism about whether or not the feedback provided is from real people.

It is an easy thing for a less than honest website owner to write a few of their own reviews and add them to their own website.  There is really no way for the average visitor to know which of these items of feedback are real and which ones were completely fabricated. But there are some dead giveaways that visitors will hang their skepticism upon if you do it wrong.

So here are my three top tips for how to do it right, based upon real experience from my own Photo Restoration site.

  1. Make sure that the feedback is not only honest but, more to the point, it can be seen as honest. Make sure that specific details about the job are provided by the client.  If the feedback seems to be rather vague, readers may start to wonder how good the service really is.  After all, if you were so impressed about a job that was done for you that you took the time to write to the company who did it, wouldn't you give a little bit of detail about why you were so happy?
  1. Look at how different the items of feedback are.  Do they all look like they were written by the same person?  Each person has a different style of speaking, and of writing.  If the comments are written by different people, the style and tone of those comments will also be expected to be different.
  1. A newer trend on some feedback pages is to include an example of the job that was done for the client.  While this does not lend itself to every situation, for some services, like graphic design and photo restoration services, it is a natural fit. This type of feedback also gives you the opportunity to actually see what the person who is commenting is referring to.  You can look at the images provided and know what it was about the image that made the person a satisfied customer. One of the biggest advantages of this type of feedback page is that it gives the service owner an opportunity to showcase some of the work that they have done.  Even if visitors still question the validity of the comments, they are still able to see the quality of the work, and make their own judgments based on that.

A big drawback of conducting business on the internet is that visitors can't always tell when a business owner is telling you the truth.  They have to have faith that the person running the business is who they say they are, and that the job they will do for them is as good as they claim it will be.

With detailed testimonials, varying styles and visual examples as part of your feedback page, visitors can have a little more assurance about the legitimacy of the claims on your site.  This is the way to ensure that they too will end up being one of the satisfied customers that will want to add their comments to your page.

You don’t need to believe me. Just give it a try and see the results for yourself.
