Breast Augmentation Options – Implant Options

When electing to have breast augmentation surgery, there are several implant options available to you. These choices include the size, shape, surface, filler and placement of your implant. Where to put the incision is also a factor.

Implant Size
When choosing the size of implant you want, consider these questions and discuss them with your surgeon.
• Are you looking for an obvious change that everyone will notice, or a subtle change made to improve your self image?
• What type of implant will offer the most natural look for your individual body structure?

Implant Shape
Do you prefer:
• A rounded shape to your breasts which makes them appear fuller and more voluptuous?
• A tear-drop shape which will give your breasts contour and curve for a more natural look?

Implant Surface
Implants come with two types of outer surface. The smooth surface and the textured surface will each offer you a different effect and feel. The choice is your own personal preference. Be sure your desires and needs are discussed in detail with your surgeon prior to making any final decisions.

Implant Filler
There are two types of breast implant fillers available and approved in the United States -- saline and silicone.
• Saline implants are filled with the same sterile saline solution that is used in general surgeries. You have the option of prefilled implants, adjustable volume implants (the amount of saline solution can be altered after implant placement) and implants that are not filled until after they are implanted.
• Silicone gel implants come already filled, in an array of fixed sizes.

Discuss each option with your surgeon before making a decision.

Implant Placement
Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages which should be researched and discussed with your plastic surgeon.
• Sub-glandular Placement –The implants are placed under the breast tissue, but above the chest muscle
• Partial Sub-Muscular Placement –The implants are under the breast tissue and about two thirds of the implant is under the pectoral muscle
• Complete Sub-Muscular Placement –The implant is positioned entirely under the pectoral muscle

The decisions made concerning your choice of implant will be determined by your personal preferences and the recommendations of the qualified and skilled plastic surgeon you have chosen. Your plastic surgeon will discuss options with you so that you are well-informed and able to make a safe and healthy decision based on your personal goals and needs.
