Cosmetic Surgery Breast Augmentation – What You Need To Know

Many people are aware that silicone implants are but most are confused with what type of implants are currently available. Today’s approved implants are made of silicone rubber envelopes filled with saline solution. These silicone breast implants are very much different from the old silicone implants used before which are now banned by the government. To make sure what the latest type of implants are and your choices, ask your cosmetic surgeon.

Silicone implants created controversy years ago when women began complaining of varied symptoms, from mild nausea to severe suffering that include scar formation, arthritis and flu-like symptom. Leaking implants were also a major problem and stories of life-threatening results surfaced.

There are cosmetic doctors who swear by the old silicone implants but newer technology has been created to make implants safer for the patient.

You must consider two important issues before considering breastimplants.

1. Never entertain breast implants if there is any history of breast cancer in your family.

2. Implants may prevent you to get accurate results in a mammography

When consulting with a surgeon about the possibility of having implants, discuss his expertise including how many of his patients have had any problems. The initial consultation must cover a thorough discussion of all issues and honest answers to the following questions:

  • What is the possibility of implant leaks, what are the signs and what to do if they do happen?
  • What is capsular contraction, the tightening of scar tissues around the implants, and how will it affect you?
  • How would your body react with the implant? Is there a possibility that your body will reject the plant and what to do if it does?
  • Would additional surgeries be needed?
  • Would mammography results be affected by the implants?

Capsular formations, in varying degrees, invariably occur in all breast cosmetic surgeries. These occur in 3 stages and each requires your attention. These are:

1) The breasts feel unnaturally firm even though it looks normal;

2) The breasts looks abnormal because the capsule has contracted distorting the implant into a ball; and

3) The breast looks abnormal because the capsule has contracted and is painful.

The first stage usually requires no treatment. For the second stage, the usual procedure is for the incision to be reopened and the capsule released but there is a chance that this contraction may recur. The third stage required repositioning of the implant. If pain persists, have the implant remove.

You should always follow are your cosmetic surgeon’s post-operative instructions to avoid complications.
