Fern Britton announced yesterday that she had indeed had a Gastric Band fitted to help her lose weight. This announcement was made live on ITV'S This Morning show which Fern co-hosts alongside Philip Schofield.
50 year old Fern has dropped three dress sizes, going from a size 22 to a size 16. Initially her weight loss had been put down to healthy eating and plenty of exercise which included charity bike rides.
After media reports of the Gastric Band operation, Fern decided to discuss her surgery openly to put an end to the speculation that had been surrounding her new slimmer shape.
Fern is not the only celebrity to have had a Gastric Band fitted. Anne Diamond also had the operation after struggling to lose weight for many years. With reference to Fern Britton, Anne has been reported as saying ' She is now much healthier and less likely to suffer from diabetes, heart disease, stroke or even cancer and her life has probably been extended by some 10 years. We live in a world where the worst sort of food is peddled to us like drugs, yet we are lambasted if we dare put on a pound or two'.
Fern has been accused of cheating to lose weight by the media and some of her fans. She has been accused of misleading viewers by not revealing details of her surgery sooner.
Gastric Band surgery is not an instant solution to weight loss. It will assist in decreasing overall daily food intake and can help achieve a sustainable weight.
The band works by causing a feeling of fullness when eating thereby allowing you to eat less. This is achieved by placing the band around the uppermost part of the stomach, dividing it into two sections, with a small opening between sections which allows food to pass through. The section above the band forms a small pouch that fills with food quickly.
The operation doesn't prevent people from having food cravings which can lead to eating the wrong types of food. Self discipline is needed to prevent over eating and life style changes will be needed to include exercise.
Fern Britton has reportedly lost five stones in weight, the Gastric band combined with healthy eating and exercise has been successful for Fern. She looks great and has reduced her risk of suffering from obesity related illnesses significantly.
