Laser eye surgeons in the U.K. are finding younger and younger faces in their waiting rooms in recent years.
With corrective eye surgeries costing around £350 to £2,000 per eye, an increasing number of young adults aged 20 to 25 are opting for laser eye surgery procedures over the expensive hassles of day to day use of eyeglasses and contact lenses. It also can turn out quite cost efficient too, as a pair of prescription glasses can cost as much as a surgical procedure; while a lifetime of prescription eyewear can reach well over £20,000.
Despite the demand for laser eye surgery, doctors do recommend however, that patients wait to have the surgery until they have had a stable lens prescription for two years. Nearsightedness tends to increase during puberty and plateau at around 30.
But according to doctors, the most important requirement for laser eye surgery is passing a series of pre-op examinations. If all goes okay during these visits, about 95 percent of patients walk away from the surgery satisfied, experience few side effects, and have a less likely chance of returning for re-treatment.
While young adults are looking to rid themselves of eye problems early on, an ophthalmologist in London hopes to wipe out the threat of eye aging altogether.
John Marshall, a professor at King’s College, is developing a short pulse laser technique to delay age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that has left more than 200,000 people in the U.K. blind.
His “retinal rejuvenation,” in which he stimulates enzymes to remove waste from a thin membrane behind the retina, has seen positive results in clinical trails of 100 diabetic patients.
More trials are needed, but Marshall hopes that the treatment will be available to the public in the next two to five years.
