Teens – When is Cosmetic Surgery Appropriate?

When is it appropriate for a teenager to consider undergoing breast augmentation surgery? In order for breast augmentation surgery to be effective, a young woman’s body must have reached full maturity. It is not rare for a woman of eighteen or nineteen to still experience a growth spurt even into her early twenties, during which time she may gain another size in her breasts.

Typically breast augmentation may be considered before full maturity only in special cases and under extenuating circumstances such as:
Some childhood deformity or disease
An accident that has somehow disfigured the young woman

Then a surgery might be performed to give her a sense of normalcy and allow her to feel that she is not different or looked down on for her disfigurement.

It is a fact of life that teens can be cruel to one another. It is also a fact that peer pressure plays a major part in the decisions a lot of teens make during their impressionable years. If you are a teenage woman who is considering undergoing breast augmentation surgery, think long and hard about it. Discuss all your options with your parents or some other valued adult, and with a qualified plastic surgeon and get as much information as possible before making a final decision.

Questions to ask yourself

· How long have you been thinking about having breast augmentation surgery?
· Have you considered the life-long impact this surgery will have on you? Often women who elect to have breast augmentation surgery at a young age will require more surgery years later as their bodies continue to change.
· Are you electing this type of surgery for yourself or to please someone else in your life? Are you trying to fit in and have breasts like your friends? Are you trying to please a boyfriend?
· What expectations do you have as a result of your surgery?
· Have you taken the time to research the procedure and learn about all of the factors involved?
· What additional questions do you have for your surgeon to be sure you are completely informed of all aspects of the surgery from beginning to end?

Breast Augmentation surgery is designed to help women enhance their existing features, boost self-confidence and help them feel good about themselves. Your self-image of your own body should be psychologically healthy. This type of surgery will change your body for the rest of your life. Be sure you are choosing the procedure for the right reasons.
