Anwar Ibrahim - Malaysia's Opposition Leader

Anwar Ibrahim is a Malaysian politician who was once shockingly fired from his Deputy Prime Minister post, arrested and put on trial in 1998 on the charges of corruption and sodomy. A former protege in the Malaysian administration and most likely to succeed the top post of Malaysia's Prime Minister then, Anwar was surprisingly detained and tried by the law.

Anwar before his arrest was groomed for leadership. He had a mercurial rise within the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) ranks when he joined the party in 1981. A passionate student leader, he was no stranger to being persecuted as he was once detained under the Internal Security Act Law, which allows for detention without trial, in 1974 for student protest against rural plight of hunger and poverty.

Fast forward 20 years plus later, once again Anwar Ibrahim was nabbed during the night at home by the police and detained under the Internal Security Act for questioning. Anwar pleaded innocent to both counts of charges when he appeared in court on September 29th, 1998. The controversial trial ended with him being sentenced to six years in prison for corruption and nine years for homosexual act on April 14th, 1999.

The case then provoked international criticism such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. Most media outside of Malaysia regarded the persecution of Anwar Ibrahim as unlawful and lacking in fairness. His crime it seems stems Anwar's challenge to then Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Malaysia's Federal Court however overturned Anwar's sodomy charges in 2004 and he was released from prison after Anwar had completed his prison term for corruption. His photo of the black eye as leaving the court compound, which was inflicted by then Inspector General of Police in 1998 during interrogation, became the symbolic image of Anwar Ibrahim's comeback political reforms.

The 60 year old politician dubbed 'The Comeback kid' is at the center of Malaysian politics once again these days. Against all odds Anwar Ibrahim has returned to Parliament which once denounced him, with a landslide victory at a by-election in his constituent at Permatang Pauh on August this year. Now as the leader of the Malaysian opposition party, Anwar is set to play a leading role in assembling an Opposition government to mount a serious challenge at the current ruling coalition UMNO.
