The quickly advancing industrialization of China, India, and other countries is driven by the proliferation of fossil fuels combustion. Especially China depends heavily on indigenous coal reserves to power its astonishing economic ascendency.
Combustion of fossil fuels generates carbon dioxide, which subsequently accumulates irreversibly in the Earth's atmosphere. This accumulation is the manmade cause for the still modest warming of oceans and lands and is beginning to cause climate changes.
Extrapolation of data for population growth, individual energy consumption, and economic progress into the future shows that carbon dioxide emissions are bound to multiply enormously towards the second half of the twenty first century.
Politicians are comforted by the fact that the most threatening and most devastating increases of greenhouse gas emissions are still a few decades away. Unfortunately and imprudently they forget that installation of any countermeasures to first reduce and then halt global overheating will last a very, very long time.
Realistically, one can expect that world leaders will keep dickering for years and maybe decades before a workable plan for rescuing our planet from severe and irreversible devastation will emerge.
Any effective efforts to rescue our Earth must be based on a few, simple countermeasures. Implementation of the following measures is urgently needed.
- Complete and permanent cessation of all energy conversion processes based on fossil fuels combustion,
- Construction and start-up of renewable, emission free energy sources as replacements for fossil fuel based energy conversion facilities,
- Staged changeover of energy consumption to plentiful, affordable, and non-polluting energy sources in the form of electricity, transportation fuels, and heating gases,
- Continuing development of technologies for more efficiently converting renewable energies and for cleaning the Earth's atmosphere.
Developing missing energy technologies will take time. Rapid advances in information technologies have led to unrealistic expectations of time spans for other, unrelated, emerging technologies. Information technologies and energy technologies are diametrically opposed examples for exceptionally short and abnormally long development timelines.
Breadboards for testing a new phone or a new computer component can be completed within days and weeks. Designing and constructing pilot plants takes years and arriving at profitable production facilities my last more than one decade.
Exceptionally long development schedules have another, detrimental attribute. They invariably cause venture capital managers to deny development funding.
Free market economists have not yet fully acknowledged this systemic failure of the capitalistic system to generate early development funding for transformational technologies. Atomic energy utilization, nuclear fusion, space exploration, and novel energy supply technologies can only reach free markets after substantial government funding shortens timelines and reduces private financing risks.
The US must soon make a far-reaching decision. Is it going to create a mission oriented agency to become a world leader in the development and application of energy technologies or must the world wait for a country with a more agile government like China to take over this potentially highly profitable opportunity of developing exceptionally profitable energy technologies?
At present only three candidate countries seem to have the resources for developing critically needed energy conversion, energy storage, renewable energy production, and atmosphere restoration technologies. These countries are the US, the European Union, and China.
The USA is undoubtedly the most qualified based on past experience, scientific resources, and economic strength. The actual initiation and start-up costs for a mission oriented agency are very small when compared to the momentous financial aid dispensed by the US in 2008 to a wholly undeserving financial industry.
Better yet, such early funding for an independent agency will produce many benefits within a comparatively short period. Returns on investments will be huge.
What will be the early benefits of such an independent Energy Supply Development Agency?
After successful development and large scale demonstration of each of the previously listed, critically needed energy technologies, huge internal and international markets will open up. The US will have a chance to again assume its global, economic and technical leadership.
Such an agency can create millions of new manufacturing jobs in the US. New energy technologies can make the US independent of foreign petroleum imports. Exports of critical components for novel energy production and conversion facilities will strengthen the balance of payments and will facilitate the discharge of external debts. The USA can become again the undisputed leader in a world that will have a better chance of taking care of its growing population.
These opportunities may also create a better way to spread democracy. People will become anxious to follow successful examples of building wealth and democratic institutions.

Terrorist Watch List: Homeland Security Defines Millions of Americans as Domestic Derrorists
By: byron ruffin | 27/12/2009James Moore? Drew Griffin? These don't sound like names that could be commonly found in any other country but the U.S. CBS actually found and interviewed 12 average Americans on the "no-fly list", one of them was even a military service member. Among them were names such as Robert Johnson and Gary Smithon the list. How many foreign potential terrorists could there possibly be with these names? Sure, it is possible, but the odds are not great.

Italian politics in time of worldwide economic slow-down
By: Massimiliano Gobbato | 24/12/2009The last material attack at Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, has raised among Italian politics a strong debate on the “climate of hate” that has been created against the Prime Minister and his government. Actually, the smash on Silvio's face is a good representation of Italian politics, nevertheless not of this imaginary “climate”, but rather of a political and economical impasse.

Limitless Affordable Energy without Climate Changes
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 22/11/2009 | PoliticsA long-term energy plan is proposed that will provide clean energy for centuries. It is based on inexhaustible energy sources, accessible energy technologies, limitless energy supplies, and a reversal of atmospheric carbon dioxide accumulation. A few novel energy technologies are identified that will assure sustained growth of world economies and can provide clean energies forever without ecological damages to our Earth.
Copenhagen at the Crossroads; Adaptation or Mitigation?
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 04/11/2009 | PoliticsIn Copenhagen, world governments can choose adaptation or mitigation for dealing with global warming. Adaptation will result in a slow and protracted decay of world economies. Mitigation will eventually restore Earth to a condition without global warming and without climate changes. Negotiations to extend the Kyoto Treaty are failing. Mitigation must be adopted in its place. Development of new energy technologies is the key.
Kyoto Protocol in the Limelight
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 01/11/2009 | PoliticsThe Kyoto Protocol of 1997 is still the concept for agreeing on a more effective worldwide agreement on dealing with greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing energy consumption is expensive and will strangle economic activities. A new concept must assure that world economies will continue to prosper. Only strong economies can provide opportunities for growing populations. This article introduces such a new approach to climate control.
Who Will Win in Copenhagen?
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 24/10/2009 | PoliticsU.S. Chamber of Commerce position is indefensible. Growing world economies are producing escalating greenhouse gas emissions. Severe global overheating will change climates dramatically. Rising sea levels, flooding, violent windstorms, and extensive droughts will destroy world economies and will cause economic collapse. World economies must agree on producing renewable energy supplies. Fossil fuel burning must and can be halted completely.
Copenhagen Can Open New Era of Clean and Economical Energies
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 01/10/2009 | PoliticsGrowing world economies are producing escalating greenhouse gas emissions. The Kyoto Protocol is ineffective in halting or reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide accumulation. Severe global overheating will change climates dramatically. Rising sea levels, flooding, violent windstorms, and extensive droughts will destroy world economies and will cause economic collapse. World governments must develop supplies of clean and economical energies.
GM's MPG Wonder
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 19/09/2009 | AutomotiveGeneral Motors just announced that its new hybrid, the VOLT, can achieve a mileage of 230 MPG. It seems that the figure has been arrived at by selecting an unrealistic set of driving conditions that heavily favor city driving on electric power only. It is proposed that a different set of figures is given to prospective car buyers that are based on the costs of driving on electricity in the city and on gasoline on the highway.
Copenhagen Strategies for Saving Earth from Overheating
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 08/09/2009 | PoliticsEscalating carbon dioxide emissions are fouling the Earth's atmosphere and are causing global overheating. A comprehensive plan and enlightened leaders are urgently needed to develop novel energy technologies. Only a mission oriented government agency can marshal the means for preparing engineering solutions and reducing investment risks. Changeover from fossil fuels to emission free, renewable energies will last decades and must begin soon.
Why Kyoto and Copenhagen are Duds
By: Klaus H Hemsath | 05/09/2009 | PoliticsIn December of 2009, representatives of most countries will congregate in Copenhagen. The meeting is supposed to extend, redefine, and agree on more severe carbon emission limits. The Kyoto concept of reducing global warming is deeply flawed. It must be replaced by a new, more effective approach. Novel concepts are emerging but are not yet considered. The meeting will be a failure unless China or other Asian countries bring new ideas.
