Funding Cuts in the Youth Sector

Several people have contacted me about cuts in the youth sector through emails and private messages asking why nothing has been mentioned about it. As a forum you and anyone can start any discussion topic they want. Since nobody has taken up that request.........here we are a topic about funding cuts in youth work.

As far as i know €4m euro has been cut already and there are more similar cuts planned for at least the next 2 years. I can't talk about the impact on this across the board but within our own project i have seeing the effect on this coming towards summer programmes.

The amount of activities planned for this years summer programme has been greatly reduced this summer. Most planning is now centre based with the odd trip out for each group.

Any external facilitators have had to off been stopped due to no funds to keep paying them. Any hiring of venues has also had to stop from lack of funds.

No group will go on any residential trips this year, which is probably the highlight of most young people's involvement in a group.

Our annual community fun day has had to be cancelled which on average is attended by over 300 people. It's also a good way of putting the project out there and usually brings in a few new faces come September.

The only reason any summer programme is happening at all is from the purse strings been pulled since the cuts came into effect so they have also had an impact on week to week work.

I have seeing unemployment soar for young people aged between 16 and 21 and that looks like getting worse too. Early school leavers have not got a chance now when they leave school, which has left a large amount of teenagers with nothing to do from morning to night. Been under resourced now is not good enough.

All this is bad enough but there is a real fear for the future if there are to be more cuts. Most projects I have spoken to are in the same boat. Beyond that i don't know what type of an impact has been made but feel free to post your thoughts on our forums here

Youthworkforum

The Youth Work Forum was designed to be an online one stop shop for youth workers and others working with young people to engage in and share information. The oppurtunity to speak with other youth workers does not come along to often and with this site been the first on-line community for Youth Workers in Ireland I hope it will provide that oppurtunity. It is my hope that the ownership of this site will belong to it's members. Any website can always be improved and your feedback as to what you feel could improve the site is most welcome. The site is not affiliated to any youth organisation although their input would be very valueable around employment opportunities, training and up to date publications. The site has no partners and is not sponsored or funded by any organistaion. The Youth Work Forum was set up in March 2009, I have run various different types of forums over the past six years and know that they only ever work with the input from it's members. The Youth Work Forum is the first online community for youth workers in Ireland. Please invite as many of your co-workers as you can, the more people that post on the forum the more valuable the site becomes for everyone.

Why,the clubbing of the two countries, as AF-PAK ?

By: Mushtaq Ahmad Sethi | 10/12/2009
The first objection, I have is the clubbing of the two countries Afghanistan and Pakistan, as Af-Pak. They have always been two separate sovereign states with completely different, historical background, landscape, cultural, traditional, economys, literacy, territorial and population sizes, militarily and society etc. In short the only thing common between the two country’s are religion and the common line known as the Durand line which is shared but only distinguesh them as two entities....

Once upon a time an emperor had a dream at night. He asked his ministers “what does this dream mean?” One his ministers said “My lord your whole family will die before your death”. The emperor got angry and sentenced his minister to death. Another minister said” My lord you will have a longer life than your relatives”. The emperor was very happy to hear this and rewarded that minister. By narrating this story I want to explain that by telling the same fact in a different way changes its impact a
