HONDURAS IN NEWS

Recently Honduras was in the news because of it’s President Manuel Zelaya was ousted on 28 June 2009 and sent out of the country.

The event had created chaos among his angry supporters who clashed with the soldiers around the Parliament in Honduras capital, Tegucigalpa.

Many of us do not know where this country – Honduras is situated.

When I searched for more information on this country, I found that Honduras is one of the poor countries of Central America which lies in between North and South Americas.

Surrounded by Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Caribbean Sea, Honduras, enjoys tourists’ patronage.

The country was a colony of the Spaniards and it got the Independence in 1821.

After Independence, Honduras was ruled by dictators, military juntas, coups and counter coups.

In this beautiful country, with coastline having enchanting beaches invariably attracted the rich North and South Americans to spend their holidays.

Honduras is known for its banana which is exported to USA and other countries.

In addition, timber is abundant and also exported in large quantity.

The misery of Honduran poor was missed out by the various governments ran by the riches.

President Zelaya was showing a soft heart to these poor people.

Such an act was not liked by the military and the riches.

Baton charges followed by tear gas are used by the troops to drive away the demonstrators.

Night curfew was imposed in the capital city of Tegucigalpa.

The 56-ear-old timber merchant – Manuel Zelaya came to power in 2006 and became a close friend of President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

The problem came for Zelaya when he went for a referendum on changing the constitution to allow Presidents to contest for a second term.

The Supreme Court of Honduras did not agree with the referendum

By that time, Zelays was ousted out of Honduras.

President Barack Obama condemned the coup along with the international community.

In the absence of Zelaya, Congressman-Roberto Micheletti was sworn in as the new Honduran president who warned that his predecessor will be arrested if he sets foot in the country.

Such a political calamity certainly affects the economy of the country.

However they have to bear with the government and those who run it efficiently or inefficiently.

The Central American countries are in the hands of drug smugglers and well-to-do business people who do not bother the needs of poor.

About 25 per cent of the people are illiterate and they are easily exploited by the elite class people.

How soon the problem will come to an end is not known.

Still soon we will come to know the fate of Zelaya and his followers in Honduras.

India may seem to be a devil to us but the reality is that the world is not afraid of India’s ambitions.
