The attacks on Mumbai's high-profile properties like Taj Hotel and Nariman House suggests that terrorists are targeting the nerve centres of Indian economy. They are striking at will maiming thousands of lives to create a sense of insecurity and apprehension among Indians. India has faced more premeditated and organized terror attacks than any other country in the world in the last 25 years.
To begin with terrorist attacks were concentrated in few states, but in the last four years there have been more attacks than ever before. Over 3,500 Indians have lost their lives and 7,000 children orphaned. But, there have been very few arrests and almost nil convictions. Not a single terror attack has been solved and culprits brought to book. This is all because of the votebank politics of Congress and its leader Sonia Gandhi.
This is very well reflected in the stand taken by the UPA on Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA). As soon as UPA government came to power in 2004 it repealed the law which the Vajpayee-led NDA government had introduced after the ghastly attack in December 2001. It withdrew the law not because of its stringent features, but because of its alleged misuse against minorities (read Muslims). However, the underlining reason was that the Congress wanted to appease and win over Muslims with one more lollipop.
Amusingly enough, any call by the BJP for the re-introduction of POTA or some such tough law, is counter-attacked by the Congress by contending “Did your POTA prevent attack on Akshardham Temple?” But they forget it was POTA that secured the conviction of Afzal Guru. They also forget that the acceptance of a confession to the police as evidence was what led to the conviction under TADA of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins.
Contrast this typically indolent-cum-idealistic-cum-selfish Congress attitude to the stark realism and patriotism of America when 9/11 occurred in 2001. One thing that nation did shortly after that dastardly day was the enactment of the "US Patriot Act." However draconian that law has been, it has prevented the recurrence of 9/11.
Unless India shows a similar commitment to engage in a literal war against terror, we shall continue to let Afzal Guru remain away from the hangman’s noose till as long as Indians want to be ruled by an Italian Madame, who is well supported by pseudo-secular allies.
