No October Surprise

Surprise- no October surprise this election year! Where is Osama bin Laden when a good Republican presidential candidate needs him? Where's the Bush DUI equivalent for Obama when McCain could really use it. COuld it be that the Republican party fired all their shots earlier (like May '08?), and there simply aren't any more smoking guns to be found? Didn't the Republican provide enough already?

Aides to Sen. John Kerry were increasingly confident of victory four days before the 2004 election, believing the Massachusetts senator performed strongly in three debates with President Bush and was buoyed by polls showing a last-minute surge for the Democratic ticket. Sound like a familair Obama line currently as well?

But that was before Osama bin Laden weighed in. On Friday, October 29, the 9/11 mastermind released a videotape to Arab television network al Jazeera, in which he condemned President Bush's response to the 9/11 attacks and told the American people, "Your security is in your own hands." Ah, but maybe Osama is dead by now. It's been a long time since we have heard from him.

Historians and political observers have since debated how much of an impact bin Laden's tape ultimately had, but many aides to Kerry, and even the senator himself, believe it was a critical blow to the Democratic ticket and likely swayed just enough votes in battleground states to put Bush over the top. Can you say Ohio?

"The Bush message was 'Be afraid, be very afraid,' and suddenly the biggest ghost and goblin of them all shows up, in the flesh, in the turban giving us a lecture," Tad Devine, a senior advisor to the Kerry campaign told CNN. But this year it's more like be very afraid- of a DEPRESSION! A very, very bad RECESSION? The year 2008 is much different than 2004 as are both candiates.

Would you believe a November surprise? It's still not too late for one of those.   :-)

How To Fix Airport Security

By: Nui Kahuna | 08/01/2010
During the holidays, while Commander Dithers was in Hawaii, on yet another luxury vacation, I had a lot of time to think about jihadists, or what we now know as BVD bombers. These sad, unfortunate young men, who could be cured by a smidge of horizontal bopping, unfortunately hook up with beady eyed imams who have more problems than a team of shrinks could undo in a lifetime of work.

Birtukan Midekssa condemned to life in prison by a vengeful dictator, but unconquered. Birtukan thrown into the dungeon of wrath and tears, but defiant. Birtukan beaten, bludgeoned and bloodied, but unbowed. Birtukan mocked, ridiculed and disrespected, but gracious. Birtukan denounced, vilified, strong-armed and manhandled, but unafraid.
