Invitro Fertilization has helped millions of couples achieve their dreams of becoming parents who other wise may not have. Invitro is one of the better known fertility treatments in today’s medical community. It has also been recognized as being one of the most successful procedures for helping couples conceive. In this article, we will be discussing exactly what Invitro Fertilization is and who makes a good candidate for this procedure?
First, let’s talk about what this procedure is? Invitro is when a woman’s eggs are surgically removed and placed in a laboratory Petri dish and then united with sperm from a male. Once this union has occurred, the embryo is then surgically transferred to the woman’s uterus for the remainder of the pregnancy. Even though Invitro has been very successful for many years in helping couples conceive, there are also no guarantees. And just like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. Studies have shown that the use of multiple embryos during the embryo transfer to the uterus has been known to cause multiple births. Because there is no guarantee that it will work the first time, the cost could be surmountable. But for most couples, the benefits far way out the risks.
Now that we know what Invitro Fertilization is, let’s look at who makes a good candidate for this procedure. Couples under the age of 35 would be considered a good candidate for IVF after 1 year of trying, unsuccessfully, to become pregnant. Older couples, 35 and older, who have been unsuccessful in becoming pregnant after 6 months could look into Invitro as well. If you have already tried surgery, fertility drugs and artificial insemination and still nothing, your doctor more than likely will suggest IVF. Other good candidates are women who suffer from endometriosis, irregular ovulation, problems with their uterus or fallopian tubes and or the men who suffer from low sperm count.
Age is not necessarily a disqualifying factor when doctors are considering IVF for a couple over 35 that have been unsuccessful in conceiving, but it is definitely taken into consideration. The success rate for older couples (over 35) will decrease as they increase in age. If you are between the ages of 35 and 37, the success rate is roughly 25% per treatment. Compare that with the percentage rates for women over 40, who only have a 6 % to 10% of becoming pregnant per treatment. Even though statistically the numbers for success rate aren’t high, the thing to remember is that the general health of the couple is the main contributing factor to the success rate of whether the Invitro Fertilization procedure will be successful or not.
