A combination of IVF doctors are required to be present at any fertility clinic for the treatment to be successful. There are several areas which require specific expertise and without the presence of even one the assessment will be fruitless. IVF doctors are specially equipped to handle fertility related issues. The range is as diverse as there being a gynaecologist and a psychological counselor. The other departments which need doctors are urology, embryology, genetics and surgery to name a few.
A Reproductive Endocrinologist who is board approved M.D. and has completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology is a type of IVF doctor. This person should also have supervised a minimum of twenty follicular recruitment cycles in a year. A Reproductive Surgeon is also an IVF doctor as he treats endometriosis, obstructions and other urine abnormalities through surgery or laparoscopic devices. A Reproductive Immunologist is also a certified IVF doctor who detects immunological barriers during the course of treatment. Other IVF doctors include an Embryologist who can either be a certified M.D. or can also a degree in Chemistry, Biology or Physics. This doctor should have also conducted at least a 100 IVF related programs in a year. Embryologists also specialize in fields like andrology, pre and post fertilization scenarios and pre-implantation embryology. An embryologist is also responsible for the embryo freezing procedure.
Another type of IVF doctor is a Reproductive Urologist who must be a board certified M.D with additional expertise in treating urinary tract infection and any other male disorders. It is also desirable that the urologist has a two year surgical training and is adept at treating obstructions, varicoceles and any other anatomic disorders in the male reproductive tract. The next IVF doctor is an Andrologist who is a laboratory specialist with a degree in biochemistry, endocrinology, treatment cycles or physiology. The expertise of this doctor is focused or hormonal issues in males and sperm quality. They handle the preparation of the sperm for the final copulation with the ova. This Andrologist might also be an urologist.
A good IVF clinic also requires the services of a geneticist who is a doctor specializing in identifying genetic disorders in patients undergoing treatment. This process is important because prior caution is needed in certain pregnancies in order to avoid complications. They also do parental screening and identify disorders like Thalassemia and after pregnancy offer genetic counseling to the couple. Another specific doctor required for IVF treatment is a psychologist who has a degree in counseling. This doctor is required because there is immense mental pressure during the process of IVF treatment. These doctors come in handy in sticky situations.
IVF treatment requires a combination of IVF doctors. There is no one doctor who can specialize in IVF treatment. This means that if there is any clinic boasting of a single doctor then there is something fishy. Moreover, couples who decide to undergo treatment must thoroughly confirm the credentials of the IVF doctors present at a clinic of their choice.
