Mommy Talk: Should I Choose A Pediatrician?

Should I choose a pediatrician? When to choose a pediatrician? - These are the questions which first time parents usually ask. Choosing the right pediatrician is very important. They will not only be responsible in ensuring good health to our kids. They will also help keep us at peace, all the time. In this article, we will share with you some important tips to keep in mind so that you can choose the best doctor for your child.

What is the doctor's educational background? -Most children's doctors usually have a specialized training either in family medicine or pediatrics. Pediatricians should have completed specialized training in pediatrics after graduating from medical school which makes them competent enough to deal with children's unique needs.. On the other hand, doctors who have specialized in Family Medicine should be well trained in treating all family members – checkups, preventive medicine and routine illnesses. Practicing physicians in the United States are board certified – this is a proof that they have passed a proficiency examination in their field.

Is the doctor of good moral character? - To get information about disciplinary actions which may have been taken against a physician, you may check the websites run by administrators of state medical licensure boards known as Administrators in Medicine. Some individual licensing agencies also have websites which can give you tips on how to determine whether a physician is in good standing.

How does other families or friends feel about this doctor? - If you have friends who have had experience with the doctor, ask them how their entire experience was. How does the doctor treat them? How does the doctor deal with them as clients, with his staff and with the kids, more importantly?

Where is the clinic? Find out if the doctor has multiple offices. Do you want to choose one close to your home? Or is choosing a place near your workplace enough? Does the clinic or the hospital offer enough parking space?

What are their policies about appointments? - You may want to talk to parents in the waiting room. Ask them about the average time it takes to set an appointment for routine examinations. How long do you need to wait in the waiting area before you are seen by the physician? How long does it take for you to get through a phone call? Do they accept walk-in appointments?

Admitting privileges – Find out which hospitals does the doctor have admitting privileges with. Is the hospital convenient enough for you? Does it have state-of-the-art facilities? Is it covered by your insurance company?

The clinic or the office – More than just the convenience, take time as well to look around you. Is it a friendly environment? Is the atmosphere welcoming to parents and kids? Is it kid-friendly? Does the staff relate well to not only to parents but also to kids?

Choosing the right pediatrician is very important. To give you ample time and many options as possible, start your screening process at least five months before your due date.
