When a baby arrives early it’s usually unexpected. Everything happens so quickly you can be left feeling frightened and isolated. You suddenly find yourself living from day to day and as much as family and friends try to support you, they don’t really understand.

Neonatal units can seem daunting. Regardless of how much reassurance is given, new mums can feel guilty. Were they to blame in some way? Was it something they did during the pregnancy? In reality, premature birth can happen to anyone and although it is frightening to see you baby surrounded by machines, try to remember that it is that equipment, which will enable the medical staff to help your baby.

Although the majority of preterm births occur without any obvious cause, there are some known risks for premature births, such as multiple pregnancy - overstretching of the womb that occurs in the case of twin or triple pregnancies is thought to increase the risk of premature labour; lifestyle factors – for example, smoking or using recreational drugs; and infection – vaginal infections such as gonorrhea, Chlamydia and group B streptococci have all been linked to preterm labour.

A baby is considered premature when it is born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. According to statistics , 650,000 babies are born each year in the UK, 7% of which are premature. Despite improvements in antenatal and neonatal care, the number of premature babies born each year has not significantly decreased since the 1960s. It remains very difficult to identify women and babies at risk because the causes of premature labour are not yet fully understood.
