Perth Radiation Oncology chooses Summit Matsu as the most reliable supplier

Summit Matsu has been chosen by Perth Radiation Oncology to supply them with a customised chiller to keep their linear accelerator (linac) cool.  The linac is the most important equipment used in radiation therapy which is why it was critical that the supplier chosen should be reliable in this industry where cancer patients rely upon the clinic to provide them with the best care to combat cancer.

Perth Radiation Oncology has developed a reputation for providing the best quality treatment available for cancer patients. The linac is designed to increase the speed of particles, enabling them to travel through the human body, killing cancerous cells.  During this process an extremely high voltage is used which creates a large amount of heat as a by product which needs to be kept cool, so this is when the chilling system plays a key role in the functioning of the linac.

The clinic had specific requests in regards to the design and function of the chiller.  Firstly, it was necessary that the chiller would allow for the linac to be kept cool by the process of pumping water through the machine.  Mr. Mike Masters, a representative from Perth radiation oncology emphasized the importance that a constant temperature was to be consistently maintained, he explained how “Matsu were the only supplier able to guarantee that the chiller could maintain a relatively high ambient temperature of 50°C,” thus demonstrating Matsu’s capability to build outstanding chillers.  The final attribute of Summit Matsu chillers that convinced Perth Radiation Oncology to choose them as suppliers was that they had the lowest impact on the environment in comparison to the rest of the competition. With Perth Radiation Oncology’s reputation on the line, this emphasis’s the excellent machinery and service quality provided by Summit Matsu.

It was convenient for Perth Radiation Oncology that Summit Matsu was an Australian manufacturer in case a problem ever came about.  Mr. Masters laughs as he describes a small recent problem that occurred “it was entirely our fault, we didn’t realize that there was a bypass option in the chilling compartment until about five months, in winter, the chiller was working too well and the water froze.”  Mr Masters pointed out that Summit Matsu were prompt at resolving the problem by explaining how the chiller is designed to bypass quantities of water when the weather becomes so full flow is not necessary, also preserving energy in the process.
