The Force - a Power for Good or Evil

There is a powerful cast member that has a role in the Star Wars trilogy that is as ever present as any other of the characters we meet. This character is one who has an influence on everything that went on in the Star Wars saga. And yet, this cast member had no lines, didn’t get a costume or ever appear on screen. But we sure knew when this character was active in the development of the adventure. That powerful character was only referred to as THE FORCE.

It isn’t often that we really step back and look at The Force as part of the plot of this long story line but you will have to agree, The Force is just as central to the story as any other character in any of the movies. In fact, in every case where the rebel alliance won out against the much more powerful empire, it was the force that was the key to that success. So how much do we know about The Force?

Fairly early in the first movie, Episode 4, Obi Wan Kenobi works hard to try to explain to Luke Skywalker what The Force is. This is the preliminary lesson that Luke must grasp so he can then go on to learn how to “use The Force” to prevail in his struggles against evil. So the characteristics of The Force that we pick up during this and the following movies include…

* The Force has some similarities with what most people would think of as “God” because it is unseen and exists everywhere.
* The Force is made up of the combined life forces of all living things.
* The Force has a good side and a bad side.
* The Force can communicate to people, but there is a trick to learning how to listen to it.
* The good side of The Force has to be listened carefully to or you will miss out on it’s power.
* The bad side of The Force seduces people.

As a character in a series of movies, The Force is a pretty amazing person. It is part deity and part science fiction character. You don’t have a lot of movies that can create their own religion and pull it off as beautifully as Star Wars does. But this, among many other things, is the genius of the Star Wars phenomenon

We all learned together as we got started in this long story that The Force was the only tool that Luke Skywalker could use that would give him the ability to defeat his enemies in battle. This is another unique thing about The Force because we find out that it isn’t talent, strength, quick wits or good looks that give a Jedi Knight his superiority in battle.

The Jedi Knight is superior in battle based almost solely on his or her superior ability to use The Force with precision and power to defeat foes. That is a new way of viewing heroes because we have to respect a hero not because he has phenomenal powers but because of his spiritual abilities to listen to The Force.
