Calendars have been used for thousand of years to keep track of the days. They have been around since the time of the Egyptians. They are used to remind us of holidays, seasons, feasts and many other events. There are also many different kinds of calendars like the Hebrew calendar, Islamic Calendar, Gregorian calendar, the Lunar Calendar and many others.
Every year, we change our calendars, both to mark the passing of the old year and to anticipate the new year. But how are calendars printed?
Typically, the size of calendars is 11 x 8.5 inches when folded or is 11 x 17 inches when spread out. There is also a medium sized 12 x 12 inches when folded which becomes 24 x 12 inches when opened. These usually have 28 pages in full color.
Calendars are printed using the CMYK four color processing. This means that the four colors of cyan, magenta, yellow and the key color black are layered and seemingly blended all together to create many different colors.
The paper stock commonly used in high quality calendars is the 100lb Gloss Text. This is a glossy and a fine textured paper which is similar to the paper used in magazines. They are also finished with an Aqueous coating to make them durable and to protect them form certain damages. Other paper stocks used for calendar printing by printing companies include: 80lb cardstock, 80lb paper, and others 70lb matte text.
There are also different ways to bind the pages of the calendar together.
• One is saddle stitching. This means that the calendar is stapled twice along the fold along the spine.
• Another way is to bind with what is called Wire-o binding. The Wire-o is a coated, double loop wire that is solely attached to individual holes. The calendar, therefore, is help up by a number of separate loops of wire.
• Some calendars also have holes drilled into them for hanging.
Many companies are offering customized calendars. This means incorporating the various holidays of different cultures. This is done to accommodate today’s very diverse global culture. This allows businesses to capture a wider market at the same time.
Aside from the marked holidays, companies also offer to customize and somehow personalize the images that are printed on the calendars. This is accomplished by submitting or uploading the chosen images and photos that are preferred.
Many companies also provide templates that can guide in the design process of the calendar. These templates indicate lines as guide to align designs to the center and borders so as not to place images or text within the cutting area.
Because of all these option, calendars can be custom made to adapt to your taste, purpose and even environment. Calendars are matching the theme of the places where they are hung. There are professional looking calendars that are hung in corporate offices or calendars with religious themes for conservative organizations.
There are also calendars for schools which carry educational messages and themes. Some calendars are also used as souvenirs and tokens from different events like academic conferences or rock concerts.
As calendars stay with us for a whole year, it is important to make them pleasing to look at. They need not be just a boring bunch of papers with numbers. Thanks to customized calendar printing, they can now be fun, fresh and exciting.
