The population is getting older and more jaded every year. Baby Boomers are retiring and Gen X-ers are moving up in the world – making more money and spending more money. At the same time, most people are losing time – there isn’t enough time for running errands and doing household chores, much less time for relaxing.

Here’s a tip list of what’s working in connecting with the customers of today:

Mobile Marketing Mobile marketing refers to marketing through cell phones and BlackBerrys. The Mobile Marketing Association estimates that in 2008, “89 percent of brands will use text and multimedia messaging to reach their audiences.” Video phones are becoming more affordable and widespread, so expect to use more media marketing.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to use mobile marketing – you can send text messages that include advertising and coupons from a PC, without using a wireless service provider.

The Internet Businesses have spent as much as 33 percent more this year on online advertising than last year, according to digital marketing firm 24/7 Real Media Inc. Google AdWords is becoming widespread, with small business and even personal blogs including the ads. It’s not a bad idea to market on blogs – you can reach an extremely niche group. Oftentimes, blog visitors visit their favorite blogs nearly every day, so you can gain great memorability by advertising on these sites.

Feel the Boom Baby Boomers, those born between the years of 1946 and 1964, are a segment of the population that are starting to retire, or are in their highest-paying times of their careers. Either way, this group has money to spend. Boomers are open to new experiences and are more willing to try new brands than the generations before them. Boomers are also known to refer business, which make them an excellent group to focus on.

Boomers tend to travel in groups, so giving them discounts to refer a friend or giving bulk discounts works well to entice them to your business. This group is also quite responsive to direct mail. Up your brochure printing budget and postcard budget and get those pieces to them pronto!

Social Networking Web sites like MySpace and Facebook are just as popular now as they were last year. It’s hard to find someone under 40 that doesn’t have an account on one of these Web sites! The sites show people’s ages, interests and location, so it’s a gold mine for marketers. You can create your own MySpace or Facebook page for your business and become “friends” with hundreds, even thousands of people that way. Then you update your page continually with fresh information and special offers to keep people interested. People can also leave you comments, so it’s a great tool for getting candid feedback.

These are the techniques that work today – if you aren’t using them, you’re missing out on a lot of potential business! People are connected 24/7 now, so you need to be too.
