There are few things in life that you can count on being there for you no matter what. You can count on the sun rising in the east and the sky maintaining its color and such other beauties of nature that come in regular cycles maintaining their rhythm like clockwork. But there are few organizations that one comes across that behave just like the beauty of nature. One such organization is UPS, short for United Parcel Service which is a huge public company.
Found almost a hundred years ago by Jim Casey, this company impacts the world of commerce and business in almost every conceivable way every day. Employing thousands of workers from drivers to package handlers to administrative and support staff, UPS delivers thousands of packages worldwide and for the most part on time. Whether you ship one box or a hundred boxes, UPS is there for you everyday like a friend.
What impresses me the most is the attitude of the drivers. These drivers are generally friendly, courteous and very professional in their demeanor. I have never yet seen or heard a UPS driver complain about anything and believe me I have dealt with a lot of them in the past several years. They have almost become a part of my daily routine as I wait everyday for the UPS driver to do his pick up service.
Many companies can learn a lot from UPS regarding various facets of the business world from customer service to cost control to employee relations to giving customers a sense of reliability. May be the automotive company executives should be required to go and work for UPS for a period of time before they return to work tomorrow; may be that will make them better managers and not remain to be the cry babies that they have recently become.
