Raleigh, N.C.— The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro has awarded a grant to Special Olympics North Carolina in order to further Special Olympics athlete and coach recruitment and sports training and competition opportunities for the Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro local program, according to Keith L. Fishburne, SONC president/CEO.
The grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro totaled $5,000. The grant will be used by Special Olympics North Carolina to support Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro athletes training and competing in their choice of 19 sports offered by the local program. The Guilford/Greensboro local program will use the funds to provide sports equipment, access to training facilities and recruit new volunteer coaches and general volunteers to work alongside the athletes.
“We are very appreciative of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s continued support of our mission,” said Fishburne. “This generous donation will positively impact hundreds of lives and strengthen the Guilford/Greensboro local program and Greensboro community as well.”
Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for more than 38,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes inspire greatness through their success and provide motivation to the thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program committee members and event organizers involved in Special Olympics statewide. SONC offers Olympic-type competition in 20 sports on local and state levels. It is the second largest Special Olympics program in North America in terms of athlete participation.
