Chantix: you Will Love to Quit Smoking

For cigarette smokers, CHANTIX is a new tool to fight the habit of smoking. Even though, Chantix isn't a magic pill, but it may make it easier to stop smoking. Chantix (varenicline) has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006 as an effective pill for adult smokers who want to stop smoking. This smoking cessation pill, also known as Champix in Europe, is marketed by its manufacturer Pfizer, as Chantix in the U.S.

CHANTIX contains no nicotine, but it targets the same receptors that nicotine does. And this drug is believed to block nicotine from these receptors. It is the only prescription treatment of its kind. Studies show that at the end of 12 weeks of using Chantix, 44% were able to quit smoking.

Among the four million Americans who have been prescribed this drug are its biggest fans. A 30-year smoker, David, who used Chantix after developing Coronary Artery Disease said, “For me, I thought it was a miracle drug.” Besides that Chantix has been proven to be more effective in helping smokers quit than Zyban. The average person in these studies had been a smoker for more than 24 years. The trials involved a mix of men and women who smoked on average 10 or more cigarettes a day.

Pfizer, the company that makes the drug, claims that 44 percent of people who begin taking Chantix are not smoking after 12 weeks. But, it is also suggested to take Chantix exactly as it was prescribed to you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts; make it a point to take it as recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. On the other hand, there are also some side effects of this drug that include nausea (30%), trouble sleeping, changes in dreaming, heart palpitations, constipation, gas, and/or vomiting. If you have some serious side effects that bother you or don’t go away then stop taking Chantix and consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Apart from that Chantix should not be taken with other quit smoking medicines. Plus, you may need to consult with your doctor if you have kidney problems or other problems before using this drug. The other thing is that before starting Chantix; tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, as well as all the medications and supplements you're taking, especially if you're taking inhaled insulin, asthma medicines or blood thinners.

And above all, the last important thing is that to be successful in smoking cessation, you need persistence and commitment to your goal.

These artificial releases of chemicals become the “new normal” but they are completely predicated on the presence of nicotine. The body sees any change to the “new normal” as a threat. Smoking withdrawal can be seen as a mechanism to force you to take in nicotine. It is imperative that you understand this. Just like your body triggers your sense of thirst when it needs water, it will trigger your craving for cigarettes when it needs nicotine.
