Self Hypnosis to Quit Smoking - How is it Done?

Self hypnosis to quit smoking is slowly gaining respect as an effective method to help people overcome an addiction to cigarettes and nicotine. Thankfully most people are past thinking of hypnosis as a trick or a scam used by stage magicians to entertain audiences and have realized that hypnosis and self hypnosis are actually just useful mental tools that can be used for the betterment of ones life. In fact this is nothing new as meditation masters and NLP practitioners have been doing very similar things for centuries!

How is self hypnosis to quit smoking done then?

This can be an intimidating challenge for many people who have no idea how to start and are often wary of the stereotypical ideas of swirling circles, swinging watches and the like. There is some truth to these things though as certain tools can help you enter a hypnotized state. These tools are usually based around solitude, repetition, and focus. With this in mind you need a good quiet spot with no distractions and no interruptions as an essential part of self hypnosis then other tools can be added such as:

  • A single lit candle - This is useful to stare at that keeps yourself less distracted and more focused.
  • A metronome - Some people like the rhythmic ticking as somethi9ng that can help with repetition and focus as it is so steady.
  • Self Hypnosis CDs or MP3s - There are many very good self hypnosis audio tools available to help you enter this state and stay relaxed.

The reason for all this focus and relaxation is to sink below the conscious mind which is the part of your brain that deals with the complex problems of life, constantly analyzing all input and output fro out minds and open up access to the unconscious mind which is much more primitive and deals with emotions, feelings and ingrained behavior. When you have access to the unconscious mind you can start inserting thoughts and phrases that can help you quit smoking through repetition of these phrases.

The idea is that when we are back to our normal self if confronted by a stressful situation that out conscious mind would still be saying 'no i should not smoke!' but your emotive unconscious mind drives you to do it for the comfort of the habit; you will not be as susceptible. Instead of being led stray by your reactions and emotions you will be much more able to control those feelings that used to break your resolve.
