Smoking: the Death Trap

Sometimes there are a lot of things we want to do but cant. We have great intentions and plans but we are unable to execute them. Quitting smoking is one such task. People know that cigarette is bad for health; they know that it can harm them but they are unable to quit it. Reason is simple: they are addicted to it.

What is addiction? Why is it so difficult to leave it? The definition of addiction as per the dictionary “addiction is a term used to describe a devotion, attachment, dedication, inclination, etc. Nowadays, however, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual's health, mental state or social life”.

Hence, this definition makes it clear that man knows the ill effects of smoking and yet can’t give it up. However, nothing is impossible. The book “Alchemist” says that if you want something badly enough, then the whole universe conspires to get it for you. So this implies that incase you want to give up smoking, there are ways and solutions available:

1. The first important thing is to understand is that smoking is bad for health. Yes, we all know that smoking is not good but we seldom realize it. So, incase you want to quit smoking, research on the ways to quit smoking.

2. You need to want to Quit Smoking. It needs to be a realization within you. Smoking not only harms the smoker, it also harms his family. Passive smoking is a leading cause of cancer around the world. Hence it is important to realize what smoking does to you and your fam ily which will make you want to quit it.

3. Join groups for quitting. Join groups like smokers anonymous etc who are dedicated to quitting smoking. Having someone else in the same boat makes a big difference.

4. Use medicines like chantix. Chantix helps to quit smoking by shutting down the pleasure centers in the brain. Hence the smoker does not get the desired satisfaction from his cigarette.

There are many ways to quit smoking. The most important step in all these methods is self realization and personal commitment.
