Fair Housing Act

Fair Housing Act

Removal of discriminatory issues has been one of the most important priorities of the federal government in the United States of America. Laws are always aimed at eradication of any sort of bias that exists in the society. This is one of the basic principles that the fair housing act is based upon. This act aims at removing any sort of prejudice that exists in the housing sector, as well as to make sure that all citizens get a fair chance to buy dwellings in the country. This act was passed by the legislation in 1968, and acts as a strong base for all racial complaints that are registered across the country.

The housing and urban development authority is in charge of enforcing the law. The department is primarily responsible for the upkeep of this law and any complaints related to such discrimination is normally acted upon by this department. It is strengthened by offices across the country and is taken care of by almost five hundred numbers of staff, spread across all offices.

The biggest aim of this law is to stop any discrimination that may take place in the name of allotment or sale of houses. The law clearly states that any sale or purchase of a property, shall be based upon criteria of good and fair business; and that no individual shall be denied permission to reside in any house, by virtue of class, creed, color or sex: if he or she is capable of purchasing or renting the house for his personal use.

The history of the law is an interesting one. Dejected by the discriminatory behavior of real estate businessmen during the early part of the century, citizens of Seattle started an agitation to put an end to such unfair practices. Though this dialogue did not have any specific effect, it tended to open a thought process about fair housing. After a huge demonstration in Aug 1963, an ordinance to this effect was forwarded by the human rights commission. Following such an outcry, the law was passed in 1968 and the fair housing act came into effect.

This has put a very fair perspective to the aspect of housing as a basic need of human beings and that any discrimination to the housing needs need to be seriously looked into. This also puts the businessmen who tend to have a bias while selling their constructed homes, in a corner, as such people practice unfair means of making money and look at the housing business as purely a business and not as a service to mankind. Such divisions based on housing need to be eradicated to have a safe, friendly and secure environment to live in.
