How to Get Out of Packing - Move to Your New Home With Less Stuff

You've been dreading it for months. Though you're excited about your new home and the prospect of finally moving into it, you've been trying not to think about the herculean effort it's going to take to pack up the contents of your current home and move it to a new place. Well if avoidance is your thing, we've got just the right moving tips for you! In many cases, taking the time to pack and move your stuff is going to cost you more grief than simply getting rid of it. It will also be much, much harder on your back. Make your life easier and tidier by getting rid of as much of your stuff before you move as you can. We've come up with a few simple rules you can use as you work your way through the house and lighten the load.

The One Year Rule

The one year rule is one of your mightiest tools when it comes to clearing out the clutter. Basically, if you haven't worn it, used it, or even thought about it for four complete seasons or more - get rid of it. This rule works really well when applied to clothing, so take it with you and visit all the closets in your house. Anything that hasn't been worn in one year hits the road. Be ruthless.

When in Doubt, Throw it Out

When you come across items that you're just not sure you're ready to part with, you probably are. The only time to hold off on this rule is when the object in question belongs to someone else, not you. Ruthless is good, but downright thoughtless could haunt you for years.

Break Ups: Time to Make up or Move on

If you've been hoarding broken things in the hope that you will one day repair them, judgment day has finally arrived. It's time to repair these hangers-on or get rid of them. This rule also applies to items with important missing pieces: the coffeemaker without a coffee pot, the chess set with no queen, the Popsicle maker with no sticks and the Tupperware container with no lid. Resolve to reunite the object with its missing part or send it on its way - no regrets

Packing up your life doesn't have to hurt and taking the time to de-clutter before your move can be extremely liberating. Not only will you make your workload a lot lighter on moving day, but this is a great opportunity way to clear the clutter out of your life and make sure it doesn't follow you to your new home.
