The growth of the city has been to the west with a new Wal-Mart opening a few years ago, along with many satellite businesses, such as merchants as well as eating establishments.
The home market is fair with mainly retirees moving to the area for its water and fishing opportunities. Lake Sam Rayburn is located 15 miles north of Jasper and is one of the best fishing lakes in Texas It draws many anglers looking for homes on or near this popular lake.
Living near the lake can be quite expensive, so many retirees choose to live in Jasper proper, giving them access to hospitals, merchants and restaurants.
New homes under construction are at a minimum, with existing homes for sale located mainly to the west of the city. The price ranges vary widely for each neighborhood depending on the age of the subdivision and its location and distance from the city. Homes can be purchased for as little as $50,000 in the more outlying rural areas. In general, homes sell for $100,000 to $150,000 near the city in newer neighborhoods.
In Conclusion: Homes with 1 to 5 acres close to the city are in the highest demand and normally have a higher appraised market value. Jasper is a quaint country town located in the middle of the piney woods of southeast Texas and is a good place to retire and live.
