Reorganizing Your Closet - Where to Start

I think the most difficult part of any makeover is getting started. When it comes to closets, they're usually in pretty rough shape by the time you decide to make a change. Sometimes just staring at the cluttered mess is enough to make you close the door and say, "Maybe another day".

Just like with any large project, tackle it by taking it in manageable steps. This will keep you motivated and spur you on to completing the job.

1. Ideally, before you begin, you've been looking at various websites or store displays and have some ideas for your ideal closet. Start with a blank canvas by clearing your closet out completely. Create piles for things you want to keep, toss, donate or store. Once you see what you're dealing with, you'll know what type of organizing products you'll need.

2. If you have a sliding door, consider replacing it with curtains. The doors block the center of the closet and steal valuable storage space.

3. Install a "T" divider to separate your closet into two distinct compartments. On one side hang two separate rods, one higher than the other, at least 36 inches apart, for pants and shirts. On the other side, hang a higher rod for dresses or longer items.

4. Add hanging canvas shelves for extra sweaters, jeans and shoe storage or pick up some handy mesh cubes and stack them as you need them.

5. Make use of extra space behind your clothes by attaching hooks for hanging belts.

6. Hang "S" hooks from your rod for super handy purse and tote hangers.

7. Color code your hangers for different clothing types. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to find things when they're well organized.

8. Add more shelving above your rods if space permits. This higher storage space works great for out of season clothes or lesser used items.

9. Store last season's shoes in a clear tote to keep them dust free, but easy to identify.

10. A decorative hook hung near the closet will come in handy for robes, dry cleaning or your next day's outfit.

11. If your closet isn't wired for light, pick up a battery-powered, peel and stick fixture.

12. If you have shelves, but no drawers, use decorative baskets for your under things, socks and hosiery.

13. To divide a long shelf and help keep folded items together, use acrylic shelf dividers. They resemble bookends and hook right onto the shelf.

You'll be seeing fewer of the sprawling McMansion designs as buyers opt for smaller homes with efficient designs. Don't just go on what an agent tells you about the condo; do your own research. Even the sight of pets in the building or in the building's windows is not an indication that pet ownership is allowed. Ask to see the condo's declaration or bylaws. Get an updated copy of the CC&Rs;(covenants, conditions and restrictions) to peruse.
