Simple Words Sell More Houses

Real Estate is the Best Buy, Ever!
Chattels Real is the Optimum Purchase, Anytime!
Immovables are the Superlative Acquisition, Unceasingly!
Landed Property is the Inimitable Investment, Everlastingly!

While the thesaurus is your friend in a pinch, don't depend on it to write your listings or area pages for you. Writing outside your own voice - that is, not writing how you speak - can be more detrimental to the effect you're after than helpful. The thesaurus is not a plug-and-play device. Pasting in a synonym, especially a “fancy” synonym without taking into account the shades of meaning that it conveys will weaken your prose instead of strengthening it.

The appropriate use of synonyms is only gained through reading extensively and integrating the language you absorb into your daily life. It is also gained through your contact with your clients – listening to their speech patterns and how they phrase what they say. Connecting with potential clients is done online with writing that says to them, “I understand you and your life and your goals.” You want to appear comfortable with your writing and your message.

Your writing is a tool to convince people of your authority on a subject. If you're looking into the thesaurus for the “ideal” word, chances are that the one that first occurred to you is the best. To use language that you don't normally use is to risk a jarring effect in your writing that painfully exposes your ignorance of how such language is properly used. If you are comfortable using certain words in everyday speech, it is more likely that you will know when they are appropriate for your online writing.

Simplicity is always preferable to overdone flowery prose. Overdone writing says that you're trying too hard or that you're trying to intimidate your clients. Simple but straightforward writing says that you are comfortable with yourself and your use of the language and don't need “big words” to reinforce what you are saying. If you mean “real estate is a good place to put your money into”, say just that instead of “Real estate is an advantageous area to invest your financial acquisitions”.

There is a place for “big words” in prose, when you've learned the nuances of their meanings and fully understand their place in your work. Once the thesaurus becomes an occasional tool and not your main vehicle for composing your writing, it will more fully aid you in your search for the right word to use.
