Some Thoughts on Javea

The Town Of Javea

Javea is about 60 miles North of Alicante and stands in the shadows of Montgo Mountain. The old windmills on this mountain add a quirky charm.

Arenal is the main beach, and is acknowledged as a "blue-flag beach" because of its crystal clear water and spotless seafront.

Places to Visit

You could visit the nearby quaint towns Denia, Moraira and Calpe for old Spanish architecture and tickle your palate with spicy, authentic Spanish cuisine. You might also take a trip to Terra Mitica Theme Park or Aqualandia Park in Benidorm, approximately 30 minutes from downtown.

History of Javea

This region remained under Moorish occupation until the 15th century. The names of many towns in this region such as Benidorm carry this legacy.

After the Moors were driven away, people from Aragon and Catalonia relocated here, and Valenciano (a Catalan dialect) is still the local language.

Sights of Javea

Wrench yourself free from the temptations of Arenal beach and take a peek inside the Church of San Bartolome. One of its inner walls dates back to 1244 when King Jaime repelled the Moors from Javea. The outside wall is still peppered with the scars of the Spanish civil war which took place some seven centuries later. You can't say you've seen Javea unless you've explored the Port and the Old Town.

The Old Town has remained impervious to tourist invasion for the last four decades. Calle Mayor (High Street) is indeed a pedestrian only thoroughfare - it hardly has enough room to allow two mules through!

If you feel hungry, follow the local people and you'll reach delicious restaurants serving piping hot Spanish cuisine at throwaway prices. Visit the weekly markets where you'll get everything but be careful, fakes generally outnumber genuine items.

The unusual ship-shaped church of Nuestra SeÒora de Loreto at Javea's port is well worth a visit. It was built as a mark of gratitude by the local fishermen after they survived a virulent storm. Look at the ceiling from inside and you'll find it resembles the hull of a ship.

Visit the headland light houses at Cabo San Antonio and Cabo La Nao to get a panoramic view of the Javea harbour.

Types of Properties

You'll have a wide range of apartments, townhouses and villas to choose from. Javea supports excellent infrastructural facilities of banks, excellent schools, English speaking doctors and supermarkets.

Conclusion

If you shell out in excess of £200,000 you can be the proud owner of a villa on Arenal beach. For a townhouse close to the beach you'll have to part with at least £170,000 and if you want a two bedroom apartment you could get it for as low as £120,000. If you're happy with a one room apartment right in the middle of a mesmerising community garden, you could get it for £80,000.

Some Thoughts on Javea

Costa Blanca means White Coast in Spanish. It probably got the name from the numerous bays overlooked by white cliffs dotting this region. This coastal area lies between DÈnia and Pilar de la Horadada on one side and Orihuela and valleys of the Marina Alta on the other. Salubrious climate, exhilarating Mediterranean breeze and mouth-watering Spanish cuisine make this a hot spot destination on the tourist map. Javea is the most well known town in this region.
