Unique Philippine Homes

Because of the Philippines’ varied geological and geographical features, Filipinos have come to evolve a significant number of diverse methods in adapting to their environment. Depending on where they are located, Filipinos have built Philippines homes that are unique to the physical characteristics of a particular terrain or region in the Philippines.

For example, Filipinos living in coastal communities are used to building homes on stilts and sometimes even on boats. Those who live near the water and derive means of living from the resources of the sea have evolved a way of life that is adapted to the ever-changing and sometimes violent nature of the coasts. Philippines homes found in these areas are usually built to stand regular typhoons, changing of tides, and sometimes even tsunamis.

On the other hand, residential structures that are located on mountain sides and sloping lands are single-floored or usually layered in order to utilize the land’s irregular shape and features. Since these areas are in danger or erosion from rains and earthquakes, Philippines homes built on slopes are regularly reinforced with support columns to provide additional security. Rarely would you also see high-rising homes in these regions.

However, despite the country being an archipelago, majority of the Philippines still lies on flat grounds. This is why most Philippines homes sport the same look as the usual and conventional houses you find in the West with a twist. Aside from being a little smaller than the average American house, Philippine houses are often built close to each other because of familial ties.

Since most Filipinos live near their relatives (parents or siblings), it is only logical to expect their houses to not stray far from one another. In fact, most of the time, Filipinos build homes within the same subdivision or barangay as their parents or siblings. Closer place of residence allows them to visit each other regularly especially during festive occasions where family celebrations are held such as during Christmas or Fiestas. Philippine homes, after all, are also reflections of the Filipino culture and their way of life. For more information visit to our site at http://www.atayala.com
