If you've ever lived next to a houseful of loud, obnoxious, inconsiderate or otherwise invasive people, you know how valuable good neighbors are. They are, after all, the real stuff a neighborhood is made of. A neighborhood isn't just a collection of streets and houses - it's a collection of people, a community. And if you're looking to buy a home you want to do everything you can to avoid buying a house right next to the neighbors from hell.
So this could be the impetus behind a website called "Rotten Neighbor" a new forum for people who want to publicly shame their bad neighbors. The site allows people to anonymously post comments about their bad neighbors and even provides a satellite view of the offending neighbor's house and a map to their front door.
At the best of times, the site provides a service to people looking for a new a home in a new neighborhood and gives them a sneak peek into the future, helping them to prevent bad neighbors before they begin. Rotten Neighbor has this to say about it's good points "Tree lined streets. White picket fences. Band practice next door till 3 a.m.? Definitely not what you had in mind when you bought your home!" While it's hard to argue with statements like this, people should give their heads a shake if they think that this kind of anonymously posted information is a reliable way to evaluate anything at all.
What's truly dubious about the site is that anyone can join, anyone can post and once they're in, they can write whatever they please. Posters denigrate each other for liking rival sports teams, for the wrong politics, for the wrong values. It seems as if this site is another prime opportunity for bored and disgruntled adults to get in on the cyber-bully action formerly reserved for neglected 12 year olds. With the heartbreaking story of Megan Meier and her cyberbullying neighbors still fresh in our minds, this new addition to the online community is treading some contentious territory. It will be interesting to see how they handle the lawsuits.
