College Soccer: a Few Notes

Students try out in college sports recruiting for a spot in college soccer teams. Even before the financial crisis affecting the USA and other parts of the world, many student athletes are looking to avail of the best athletic scholarships to help with the financial costs of going to college. An athletic scholarship is a form of in which schools admit applicants based on their athletic abilities. Students are expected to perform well on the school team, and at the same time maintain a fair academic standing. Athletic scholarships are quite common in the United States. Soccer is a sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players, and is thought by many to be the most popular sport in the world. It is played on a rectangular field of grass or turf, with a goal set up at the opposite ends. The object of the game is to bring the ball into the opposing goal.

The celebrated English School, Eton College, established a set of rules for the game in 1815. Soon other schools, colleges and Universities began to use the Eton rules. Later, these were collected and regulated, until a version, which became known as the Cambridge Rules, was adopted by majority of England's Universities and Colleges that participated in the sport.

The game, however, ran into another conflict. It became divided into two separate camps: some colleges preferred to follow rules that closely followed the game of Rugby. These rules permitted tripping, shin-kicking and carrying the ball; all of which were forbidden under the Cambridge policy.

Thus, on 26 October 1863, eleven London clubs and schools sent representatives to a meeting which was held in Freemason's Tavern. The purpose of the meeting was to establish a single set of essential laws to govern the matches which they played. This meeting produced the Football Association. Eventually, the supporters of the Rugby rules walked out.

An individual looking for a sports scholarship in soccer needs to let the college he wishes to attend know what he can do to improve their college soccer team. He also needs to do what he can to maintain an edge over such a large competition during college sports recruiting.

Fortunately, the Internet has proved to be a useful venue for both athletes and coaches looking for promising players to participate in their respective college soccer teams. D1Athletes is an online community wherein athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need on college sports recruiting. D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.
