Online job search techniques for job seekers

Virtually all business activities have found the Internet as one of the most effective way to communicate or advertise their business to the rest of the world. Employers and recruiters who have job openings are not left out in this regard.

The web is increasingly gaining a lion share of the advertisement market.
There are well over 500 thousand online job boards. This article focuses on how to draw a filter on which job board to start your job search with.

The type of job an individual is looking for will determine which job board the individual will visit. Job boards are classified into four main categories namely:

  • Niche job boards
  • Geographically specific
  • General
  • Unclassified

Among the four categories of job boards mentioned above, Niche sites have proven to be the most effective. It helps job seekers find jobs faster. Niche job board focus on a particular demography or select group or profession. One typical example is a job site that focus on a particular profession like hospitality, engineering, accounting, or job site focusing on recruitment of top executives.

Another powerful, effective and more prevailing job search trend is localizing job search to a particular or specific geographical area example, www.calgaryjobcentral.com, vancouverjobs.com etc.
This type of site is called geographically specific job baord. It focuses on a small geographic area, helping job seekers who are targeting jobs in a particular geographic area. Statistics has shown that 50% of job search are conducted with a certain geographic location in mind. This has made this type of job boars more effective and relevant.

The oldest and most common category is the general job board. eg. www.monster.com or www.jobscentral.ca. This category is relatively becoming less effective. It is too general and sometimes not direct to the point. The shift is gradually moving towards Niche job sites and Geographically specific job sites which have proven to be more effective.

The least popular is the unclassified job site: this category lack striking features of a complete job board. Sometimes they come in form of general classified with a job and employment section. These are often found on social networking web sites. This category is the least effective.

In summary, start your job search with the niche sites followed by geographically specific job sites. Always adapt some flexibility in your job search: Do your research ahead of your job search. Structure your resume to be striking while highlighting your strongest skill sets. Sometimes during the course of your search you will notice that the job market is shifting or leaning to wards a certain market. Try and adjust with the changes and flexibility.

Good luck in your job search.
