Defensive players guard the offensive players, often tackling the one whoever is holding the ball.  The defense should try their best to keep the ball from moving forward at all. And, by tackling the ball-carrier, the defense can even move the offense's ball backward to where the ball started at the beginning of the play.  Sometimes the defense manages to tackle the quarterback with the ball back to the line of scrimmage. This is known as a quarterback sack or a sack.
