Save Your Company Money By Recycling

Given the economical climate we are all having to tighten our purse strings, we certainly don’t want to have to pay for services/ resources etc that are not absolutely vital to increasing revenue. However, there are small things that can be changed within a company/ place of business which can save you money in the long term. One way you can do this is to recycle.

Now I know that trying to get employees to think about what they are throwing away on a daily basis can be a battle at the best of times its one that’s worth fighting. As our landfills get bigger the cost of sending rubbish to them increases and with threats of a major rise in landfill tax looming it has never been more important to keep waste levels to a minimum.

Landfill tax is currently set at £40 per tonne and this is set to increase to as much as £72 per tonne by 2013 that is a steady increase of £8 per tonne per year. When you consider that on average 60% of the waste we throw out can be recycled, separating this material out will mean that instead of sending, for example, 1 tonne of rubbish per week to landfill at a current cost of £40 you would instead be accumulating a rather more cost effective 200 kilos a week. If we work this out on a tonne to week basis it would take you 5 weeks to accumulate a tonne of rubbish rather than the previous 1 week. For those of you who are not numerically minded I have worked out the yearly saving based on these figures.

1 year sending 1 tonne per week to landfill:

40 x 52 = £2080 per year.

1 year sending 1 tonne every 5 weeks to landfill:

40 x 10.5 = £420 per year.

THIS IS A TOTAL SAVING OF £1660 WITH LANFILL TAX AT £40 PER TONNE, REMEMBER THAT THIS WILL BE £72 PER TONNE IN A LITTLE OVER 3 YEARS!

This may not seem like the saving of the century but anyway you look at it you are saving yourself an unnecessary cost and by highlighting similar expenses you can ensure that your outgoings are as low as possible.

Recycling companies generally offer a very reasonable collection charge to collect recyclable materials and you may even find that some of them won’t tie you to a contract so you can try it out. To find recycling companies in your area you can search on such sites as yell.com. If it saves you money it’s surely worth a try.
