The problem of truth is one of the most actual and burning nowadays. There are a lot of works devoted to this problem. This question was discussed in the book of Maupassant “A Piece of String”. The main character of this book is a person, who needs everybody to have the same opinion with him to confirm his viewpoint.
Hauchcome (the main character) is blamed of steeling a pocketbook. He is arrested by the mayor to be questioned. In the beginning of the story he took a piece of string and he did not want anybody to see him. He knew that his neighbor saw him so he was searching for the object that did not exist. Nowadays a lot of people do not care about being seen steeling a piece of string. It is not a big deal and the reputation of a person is not under threat because of this.
The mayor asked him a lot of questions about the deal and Hauchcome was constantly trying to prove his innocence. Any other person would tell everything and returned that piece of string. , but Hauchcome insisted on confirming to everybody that he was not guilty in this crime. For him it was not enough to convince the mayor in his innocence, he wanted to confirm that everybody thought he was not guilty. He did not understand that by telling everybody about his innocence, he made it more doubtful.
Irony always has some lessons for people. In every story there is always something that can teach us and show something good and wrong. The author wanted to show that too much insistence is not very good and it can make the innocence doubtful. If Hauchcome behaved in this situation in different way, he could prove his innocence fully and preserve his dignity.
