You may know exactly how to do a search to find the origins of a number that comes from within your own country. You can easily tell where a call comes from by looking at the area code and even the prefix on the number. However, when a call is coming from what is clearly an international number, you may find that your options are somewhat limited.
The first thing to do when an unknown international call comes in is to write down the number and look up the country code. This will be the beginning of the number before the numbers that would be the area code. You can find listings for this online, and you can also look in your white or yellow pages.
Once you know the country of origin, you can then look around to see if you can find a reserve lookup for that country. What you are going to find will depend on the country. Some have great lookup services, and others have none at all. Each country has their own privacy laws and some will not allow this type of search for any of their phone numbers. Be wary if you come across an offer for the phone records connected with any international number when searching, as they are illegal due to privacy issues.
You should know that finding the true origin of an international number is iffy at best. Even when you can find a reverse lookup service that will search within the numbers for a particular country, there is no guarantee that something will come up. Some countries like Australia or England may have more thorough searches, but some will be woefully incomplete, and that can leave you feeling rather frustrated.
While searching for a reverse phone lookup service for the country from which the call was places is ideal, there is no harm in trying to use the same reverse lookup services that you may use for domestic calls. Simply go to a reverse phone number lookup and see if they have an international section. Some of them do, and you may find what you need there. If you can’t find a name, you may find out from where within a country a call came from. That won’t be a lot of information, but it can be helpful in some cases.
