I have to start off by saying that the best way to start the date is by opening all doors for the girl, and pulling out her chair for her. This shows her from the beginning of the date that you're respectful of her and makes her feel special. No conversation can save you now.

Neutral topics are the best topics to start off with, especially if you don't already know much about this girl. One of the biggest things to avoid in any conversation is talking solely about you. Some men get nervous and try to fill the space with the story of their life, which is a big turn off to a woman. Family. Where did this girl grow up? Did she come from a large or a small family? Family is a great thing to talk about because it gives you a chance to learn what kind of person she is, where she's from, and what she wants in the future. Drinks/Food. Everybody loves this topic! This is going to help shed light on both of your food preferences, and give way to the next place that you can go and spend time together.

The two topics never to bring up:

Sex. Please, don't bring up sex at all during the first date. Not only is this embarrassing for a girl because she's out in public with you, but it makes you look like a pervert. After you get past the first few dates there is plenty of time to talk about sex.

Ex's. No girl wants to hear about how hot your ex was, or that your ex dumped you and its been five years since you've been on a date. There is no right way to bring up an ex on the first date.
